Farmer and Future
How does one say goodbye to one’s dairy farm? And for whom? ‘Farmer and future’ sketches the arguments and feelings that arise when Dirk and Annie tell their fellow farmers that they are going to quit their dairy farm business.
This story was created for the group project (and book) ‘De leesvrije stad’. It has also been published in English on Drawing the Times.
De vleesvrije stad (the meatless city) revolvs around the question of how we want to treat (other) animals in the future. Imagine: in ten years, the entire Netherlands will have stopped eating meat and the animal industry will be over. With this vision in mind, a collective of illustrators and writers created a series of graphic stories featuring many protagonists, from a Brussels politician to a chicken in Paramaribo. Can we then build better relationships—with other animals, with the earth, and with ourselves? The makers: Leyla Ali, Merel Barends, Jolanda van Benthem, B.
